The study, titled “Librairies et ruralités – Focus Occitanie,” was published by L’Agence Unique and Occitanie Culture on 22 October.

It builds on a national analysis conducted by the Fédération interrégionale pour le livre et la lecture (Fill), applying its findings to the specific context of the Occitanie region.

Researchers found that the economic model of independent bookstores in the area is increasingly fragile, with many outlets struggling to remain viable.

The report also documents pronounced disparities between urban centres and rural zones, noting that rural bookstores face higher operating costs and lower foot traffic.

Based on these observations, the authors call for a revision of public policies that support book retail, recommending measures tailored to the needs of rural communities.
