The annual Buchkita gathering took place in Frankfurt am Main on 12 October 2026, drawing a majority of the kindergartens that have earned the Buchkita quality seal for their work in early‑childhood reading promotion. Out of the 102 institutions recognised this year, 82 sent representatives to the event, creating a sizable forum for sharing best practices and celebrating achievements in literacy development.

The Buchkita seal, administered by the German Book Trade Association, is awarded to early‑year care facilities that demonstrate a sustained commitment to fostering a love of books among young children. Criteria include the integration of daily reading sessions, a curated collection of age‑appropriate titles, and active involvement of staff and families in literary activities. Recipients are expected to document measurable improvements in children’s reading habits and to contribute to a network of peer institutions.

Among the attendees, educators from Schwerin in northern Germany faced the longest journey, travelling over 500 kilometres to reach Frankfurt. The roster also featured a delegation from Ecuador, underscoring the programme’s expanding global footprint. Their presence highlighted the cross‑cultural appeal of early literacy initiatives and demonstrated that the Buchkita model is being adapted beyond its European origins.

Organisers noted that the concentration of award‑winning kindergartens in one venue provided valuable opportunities for collaborative projects and the exchange of innovative reading strategies. The event is expected to reinforce the momentum of early‑reading programmes and encourage further international participation in future Buchkita certifications.
