Decitre, a historic French bookseller founded in the 19th century, announced that it no longer operates any physical stores in the country.

The closure follows three years of gradual decline, during which the chain reduced its network of shops before finally ending its retail footprint.

Industry observers describe the outcome as a clear illustration of the pressures facing the French book‑selling sector, which has been described as “under tension” amid changing consumer habits and market dynamics.

With its last storefront doors closed, Decitre joins a growing list of traditional booksellers confronting the challenges of digital competition and shifting distribution models.
