Sally Rooney told The Guardian that her publisher, Faber, has stopped supplying her novels in the UK because fulfilling contracts could breach the UK Terrorism Act.

Rooney, whose work has sold over a million copies in the UK, announced she would continue donating a portion of her profits to Palestine Action, a direct‑action group that was proscribed as a terrorist organisation in July 2025.

She explained that while the group is not banned in the Republic of Ireland, her public support creates a “legal gray area” on British soil, potentially exposing her to criminal prosecution.

Faber’s decision, according to Rooney, was made after “consultation and deliberation” and with her full agreement, reflecting fear of arrest should she travel to the UK.

The move follows a broader dispute over the classification of Palestine Action, which remains contested and has drawn criticism from supporters of the author.
