In a recent commentary published on The Self‑Publishing Advice Center, ALLi director Orna Ross warned that artificial‑intelligence detection tools are increasingly deployed to block publications and undermine author credibility.
Ross argues that the focus on certifying a work as “human‑made” distracts from the more urgent need for due‑process safeguards that protect writers from arbitrary bans.
She notes that the technology is being used not only to target books but also to turn readers against newsletters and to create conflict among writers.
The director calls the situation a “wicked problem” for publishing, urging industry stakeholders to develop transparent standards and appeal mechanisms.
